Literary Lotus is written by writer Christine Thomas. I began working as a freelance writer in 1994, while on summer break from the University of California at Berkeley. I started out with feature writing and profiles, which I still love to write, and over the years have expanded to literary criticism, travel, culture, food, arts, and branding copy.

My literary criticism appears regularly in the Miami Herald, and before the decline in reviews and the newspaper industry, appeared in The San Francisco Chronicle, The New York Times Book Review, Chicago Tribune, The Times Literary Supplement, AARP, Paste Magazine, The Honolulu Advertiser, and many more.

My travel features, author interviews and profiles, food reviews and other articles often appear in such publications as USA Today GoEscape Magazine, Alaska Airlines Magazine, AAA Hawai‘i Magazine, Modern Luxury, Hana Hou!, Islands and more.

My work for corporate clients include campaign conceptualization and copy for branding and design firm Wall to Wall Studios Inc. Representative engagements include Shidler College of Business micro-site and brochures; ‘Iolani School brand audit, campaign and brochure copy; Hawai‘i Primary Care Association VO and brochures; and Hawai‘i Energy advertisements and various copy. For smaller firms, I’ve worked on writing and editing press releases, publicity networking, radio advertisements, print ads, offering books, business plans, RFPs and more.

I am also a fiction writer, and a graduate of the University of East Anglia (UK) creative writing masters program. My short fiction has been published in the U.S. in Bamboo Ridge, awarded best new writer 2008; and in the UK literary magazines Pretext and Spiked, the anthology Firsthand, and was shortlisted for the UK Asham Award for Women Writers. In 2011, my anthology of Hawaiian myths retold with a modern twist, Don’t Look Back, was published by Watermark; it includes my short story, “Places of Entry.”

I’d love to write for you

Guest speaking

I truly enjoy talking to groups of writers, students and other folks who are interested in the process of becoming a writer, life as a writer, getting published, freelance journalism and even my new book Don’t Look Back: Hawaiian Myths Made New.
