My review of Jose Carlos Somoza’s latest novel “Zig Zag,” is now out in the San Francisco Chronicle Book Review. I always compare the edited and printed version of my reviews with my original, and it’s always interesting to see what changes my editor makes (it’s my one source of feedback, and one way I continually grow as a writer). Given that I also reviewed this book for the Miami Herald Books Section, it’s doubly interesting to see the changes made by the editors of both papers. I had about 800 words in the SFCBR, and 500-600 in the Herald, numbers which undoubtedly impact the editing process.
As I mentioned in an earlier post, however my review was sliced, this book is truly provocative and absolutely frightening.
